EntrevistasSoul y R&B

T- ¿Has trabajado con nuevos artistas?

¿Has visitado ya España?

T- En el ámbito audiovisual, ¿Has realizado algún trabajo nuevo?

¿Has seguido últimamente a algún artista español que te guste?

Tania – Hi Dannie, how are you?, First of all thank you for accepting this second interview. We did the first interview in 2011, almost 10 years have passed. How would you say your evolution has been in the artistic field?, What would you say to the Dannie of the past with your current experience?

Dannie – Hello Tania, despite the current world situation, I am very fine. It is my pleasure to make another interview with you again. These last 10 years brought me so much experience and a freedom which I didn’t feel before. I don’t have to write music with a thought of what the audience would like, I am composing because I just like to create. If I met my younger self I would say: Be patient and trust quality more than quantity, don’t care about what other people say or advise you and always do your thing. Do whatever you wanna do and don’t stop.

T- In the first interview you were working on your debut album ‘Colors of Light’, a job that played many genres such as soul, r&b, neo soul, reggaeton and hip hop.

It also had great collaborations and a very careful production. How was the experience watching it in perspective and what did you learn from that release?, Would you change anything or feel satisfied with that first project?

D- Honestly, if it was today I would change a lot but it is just the natural part of growing up creative. Every artist knows that feeling. If I wouldn’t feel that I could do better, it would mean that I am stuck in one place.

T- What are you currently working on and how would you summarize your career in recent years?

D- I can’t think about singing as a career so I also can’t summarize it. Singing is like loving or breathing for me. And I thank God everyday that I am blessed to do what I love as my work. I am now working on my new live performance playlist.

T- What would you say is your best work? What do you feel most proud of in your career and what do you think has improved in you during this process?

D- After releasing my first album, I decided to live in NYC to explore the real origin of Soul and RnB. I‘ve been singing Gospel in churches and performing a lot. The best experience was to sing and improvize with musicians and singers who were collaborating with stars like Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston. I think I found my singing self confidence in USA. The audience is very responsive and if you suck people let you know very loudly, the same happens if you are good. It had tought me very much but the most important was to learn the intimate communication with the audience. I am very grateful for this experience.

T- Have you worked with new artists? With which artists have you felt most comfortable working and with whom do you plan to work in the future?

D- Soon we will be releasing a new song with my best friend Andr3as, the best singer from Czech Republic I know. When I finish my songs, I will think about some collaborations for sure.

T- In the field of lyrics, do you continue to write your own songs?, Any lyrics that you feel especially proud of that we can share?

D- Definitely. I am used to write my emotions and thoughts on paper so I always write my own lyrics. I have just one song which was written for me in Czech language. I am kind of proud to write my new songs both in English and Czech.

T- With all the problem of the pandemic, culture is very affected, how are you living it? Are you planning to take a tour when possible or are you now more focused on events in the Czech Republic and Slovakia? Have you already visited Spain?

D- With a feeling that I already fullfiled all of my dreams I am not frustrated in this time of pandemic, masks, quarantine and coronavirus. I use that free time to work on my new songs and life performance. I found out that I already have more than 50 original songs of my own to perform with, which nicely surprised me. I was focused just on Czech Republic but I plan to visit more European countries with my live performance. Hope that I can make it soon. Yes! I visited Barcelona twice and I just loved the vibe! Hope that the situation will ease soon so I could explore more places in Spain.

T- What was your last performance and how was it in the direct field? Based on your experience, what recommendation would you give to someone who is starting to do live shows?

D- The last performance I had was right before the pandemic and at the time my fellows were joking that this new flu from China which has just been released is justva hoax. Just a few days later their opinion changed, I think. My recommendation to all of my students always is: Just do you and enjoy it so the same goes to everyone else. Just be yourself and create.

T- In Spain trap and genres like reggaeton are sounding loud. What music do you listen to in the Czech Republic?, Do you think that r & b has gained some presence or has its place been taken by other styles?

D- RnB started to be more in fashion in Czech Republic last years which is very good for an artist like me. People in here are mostly listening to Czech pop, rock, hip hop and young people love trap. They don’t know much about styles like reggaeton. As you know, it is one of my favorite genres since my teenage years so my ears are very sensitive when it comes to this style.

And I think that Czechs usually don’t feel it and don’t know the difference between reggaeton, salsa, bachata, flamenco, merengue, cumbia, kizomba and other urban styles. Many people also think that reggaeton is dancehall. When artist in here is trying to make reggaeton music, it sounds like a good pop song with carribean elements in it but the music video will always include dancehall dancers, even if the song is presented as a reggaeton song. It’s a little bit funny.

T- In the audiovisual field, have you done any new work? Do you have a new video in mind or artistic visual project that you would like to do in the future?

D- Yes, as I mention the song with Andr3as before, we decided to cooperate with a Vietnamese artist To Minh Duc. I am very excited. I want to cooperate with Duc also on my future music videos. But let’s wait what corona time will bring us 🙂

T- Let’s go a bit to the personal field, you told us that your mother is an actress and singer, without a doubt she has to be a great example for you. What advice has she given you in these years in the artistic field? What has been your biggest personal change in these years?

D- My mum is helping direct my thoughts everytime I am lost. Her advice is always: Just be yourself and do your thing, you got it. The biggest change in my life is my love life – I am happily married.

T- Spain is being the cradle of great artists and has even achieved a grammy thanks to Rosalía. What do you think of the artist and how is she seen from the Czech Republic? Have you followed any Spanish artist lately that you like?

D- Yes. Rosalia! I found her first album in 2017 and I fell in love with her music! She has a very interesting personality and voice. Love her.

T- In order not to lose our good habits, we want to end the interview with a recommendation for a book, movie and music. Which ones would you recommend to users who are reading and getting to know you?

D- My all time favorite book is Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita. I love many movies but now the remake of my teenage favorite movie The Craft from 1996 will be released so I am very curious if it will be good. I recommend the original though. And music? If I must choose one artist, it will be very difficult. But if I must mention something what cought my attention lately then I think you should definitely listen to a Slovak singer Zea. Her older songs are really great and her debut album is very introspective and catchy.

T- Thank you very much for your time Dannie, It was a pleasure for us to interview you again. We wish you luck with your new projects and we hope to see you soon. A big hug from Spain, goodbye!

D- Thank you for the questions, Tania! The pleasure was on my side. Good luck with the launch of Urbzine! Warm hugs & kisses 🙂
